The Little Match Girl
by Hans Christian Andersen.
My entry for The Fairytale Gone Bad Vector Contest.
The story is about a little girl - abused by her family - that dies in the cold, trying to sell matches. As she dies, she keeps lighting matches to warm herself. With each match that she lights she sees beautiful visions. Finally she sees her grandmother, the one family member that treated her kindly. As she lights the last match, her grandmother appears and carries her to heaven... NOT In my version!
As she lights the last match, she drops it onto herself. Her clothes catch fire and as she burns, the devil appears and offers her her life back.
"But why?, " the child asked through parched and cracked lips.
"For vengeance, of course," smiled the Devil.
The child pauses, reliving the worst of her short life.
"Yes, I'll do it."
"Excellent." (in my head, the Devil kind of looks like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons).
And thus, the Little Matchstick Girl becomes a demon. She burns her victims to cinders and then collects their soul in her basket.
Oh man, I just squeaked by with this one. I wish I had more time... Please check out the other entries!
